Plus "Anti" finishes strong with the compelling, organ-fueled doo-wop of "Love on the Brain," Rihanna's faux (?) drunken wails on "Higher" and a shockingly sweet and mature ballad closer, "Close to You." The release also offers a breezy, improbable cover of Tame Impala's "New Person, Same Old Mistakes" (retitled as "Same Ol' Mistakes"), with Rihanna's lovely voice floating into space, and she goes on a folk bender on "Never Ending" accompanied by acoustic guitar. On "Kiss It Better," Rihanna commands the electric guitar and aggressive synth line to implore, "What are you willing to do?" and she soulfully sings in clipped declaratives on the ominous "Desperado," "I don't wanna be alone."

And speaking of woeful vocal production, Rihanna's delivery on "Woo" is ground into a grating electronic smear. One track grabbing early attention stands among "Anti's" worst: "Work," a derivative duet with Drake (in gratuitously full-blown "Hotline Bling" voice-modulation mode) is as over-produced as it is sketchy. Plus she's never sounded more confident as a vocalist, so why not? But then, Rihanna is the epitome of unapologetic. It's a risky move for Rihanna - many fans just won't have it, there are few obvious opportunities for widespread airplay or hit singles, and club bangers are conspicuously absent. Whereas "Beyonce" was monochromatic, "Anti" is an artistic kaleidoscope, a sonic hodgepodge that alternately succeeds and fails and just keeps going. It's a cousin of sorts to Beyonce's bold self-titled release from the end of 2013, only "Anti" ventures even further afield from "Beyonce's" untraditional submersion into dark sensuality. Rihanna doesn't need music to be a celebrity anymore, so there's something liberating about her blatantly unformulaic new "Anti," which, true to its name, blows off pop expectations and obligations to venture into experimentalism.
